Help with USB driver
Hi all
I'm new to DSLR's
I brought a K10d of ebay trouble is it only came with a manual & charger
Camera works fine as far as i can tell.
Problem is I can't upload pictures to my pc as although windows see's the camera it won't allow any transfers
I've searched the pentax site for USB drivers but couldn't find anything
So does anyone know where I can get the drivers?
Also while I'm here is it possible to get hold of the original software that would have been supplied with the camera? If so where?
Cheers
Mark

When you connect the camera to PC, it will appear as an extrenal drive. The photo at located in a folder (caled DCIM for the K-7). You stated: 'windows see's the camera'. What do you mean ? With XP and W 7, you should not need any driver.
Another option is to take the SD card out of the camera and put it in a card reader connected to the camera. Have you tried?
Hope that the comment will help...

Are you shooting in JPG format or RAW? Your computer probably won't accept the RAW format(s) without a proper program.

Check if the USB driver for your chipset is installed.
If the camera appears as a external drive but you get an error when copying files it may be a problem with the cable. Try to connect it to another usb-port, try both front/back panel of the PC.
Actually Windows XP, Vista, Seven do not need additional drivers to connect the camera.

Thanks for the replys guys
OS is windows XP photo's are in Jpeg format
Cable is new
I can see the drive and the files but as soon as i try to view a picture with windows picture fax viewer, first of it takes ages saying generating preview then comes back with no preview available.
If I try to copy the files from camera to a folder on pc it comes up with an error ' the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error'
I do not have a card reader so haven't tried that yet
Cheers

It could be a bad SD card, which would be difficult to firmly diagnose while still in the camera. Can you try another card?
Also, it's a long shot, but try plugging the usb cable into a different port, so that Windows has to detect the device again. Watch for a bubble in your system tray, and see if it detects it correctly, or if it thinks it's just some kind of generic drive.
Is it a really old, outdated version of XP? Do you have Service Pack 2 and 3 installed?
As others have said, it could also be the cable itself, even if it is new.

Have tried a different sd card and no difference.
Am running xp service pack 3.
The odd pic will load up but it's just ll grey?
Pictures are fine when viewed on the camera
Will order another USB lead and see if this makes a difference.

Pick up a cheap card reader while you're at it. They're like $5-10 retail, less on ebay.
Oh, and have you tried reformatting one of the SD cards with the camera itself?

On the camera's Setup menu, look to see if the Transfer Mode option has PC selected. Page 110 of the manual tells how to set this up for printing, but you should try PC and PC-F options.
There's probably a Pentax support site for your region, but you can download the software from the US site here: Digital Cameras and Accessories - Official PENTAX Imaging Web Site

Thanks guys
Here's the thing I dug out my laptop also windows xp service pack 3 tried camera on that and it worked fine
So why it won't work on my pc I have no idea?
Will just use my laptop for uploading and transfer to my pc via a memory stick
As for software!
I downloaded software update but it asks you to place the cd rom in the drive before it will install the upgrade
Where can i get a copy of the original cd rom?
Cheers

Well, I certainly should have thought of that. The upgrade checks for the volume name of the original CD. There are many ways to fool it into thinking that you have the disk, all covered in this thread. I like the last one but whichever works for you. After installation, it'll work without more checks.

Using a mounted ISO file for this sounds perfect. Gotta wonder why they even bothered with a check when it's so rudimentary.
